### 2003-X: Very Fast Conversions

• Topic Cluster: Pure Mathematics
• Topic: Scientific Notation and Orders of Magnitude
• Objective: Solve the most common conversion problems in a few seconds: grams and kilograms, meters and centimeters, seconds and milliseconds.
• Content:
• Level: 2

#### BACK to Ladder Scientific Notation and Orders of Magnitude

Some metric conversions come up again and again in physics. So often that it is a good idea to be able to do them fast, very fast, automatically If you can do them expending no mental effort at all, then you can use all of the mental ability you do have towards solving harder problems.

You should be able to convert very quickly between these unit:

• Meters and centimeters
• Meters and kilometers
• Grams and kilograms
• Seconds and milliseconds

All of these conversion involve simply moving the decimal point right or left a certain number of spaces. As with converting from scientific notation, if extra spaces are created when moving the decimal point, add extra zeroes on those spaces. Make sure you know how to do these.

#### Practice Questions:

Complete all of these until you can do them very quickly. It shouldn't take more than a couple seconds per question!
